Riley, you are the sweetest boy...

My Riley boy, I have never met a boy as sweet as you are. Some days I just do not have words for how much love I have for you, and after 4 days at Black Mountain without your Daddy, I have to admit that I am just so darn smitten with you.

My darling, you have spent a couple of months on what I can only call a hunger strike. You have not been eating, and some days you want nothing other than milk. You were melting down some days an immeasurable number of times and your Mommy was starting to get frazzled. I took you to the dentist, because you were spending more time than not with your fingers jammed into your mouth. Dentist said your teeth were fine, and none were coming in, and your Mama was stumped. But then, just like that, one bite at a time, you started to get your appetite back. One night last week I made baked honey mustard chicken and was sure that your Daddy and I were the only two that were going to eat it, and darling boy, you ate it ALL up, and that was the start of  your upward swing.

My sweet darling boy, when I was pregnant with your little sister, I was worried that you would be a little bit jealous, a little bit lost, and maybe have a hard time, while I thought your Ava would just be so smitten with Layla. None of that has really happened like I thought it would. My darling, you are so in love with your little sister. You have had moments where you have been a little lost, or angry, or sad, but for the most part, you just adore her. You are the first to come running when she wakes in the morning, to smother her with kisses, and to notice when she is doing something new, like smiling or playing with a toy. You are just amazed by her, and as much as I feel like time is just slipping away from me and things are moving too fast, I just can not wait to see how yours and Laylas relationship develops.

My sweet baby, you looooooove to snuggle and I am certain you were made just for me. You are so your Daddy in so many ways, and you are just an individual in so many other ways, but in this way, I know you are my child. You finish your bottle at night, you tuck your legs up and you curl right in. I will always be amazed how our babies manage to just curl right into us like were just meant to be there.

Darling boy, you are starting to notice that your sister is bigger and can sometimes do things that you can't do, and it does not always sit well with you. The last weekend that we were at Black Mountain you had 2 very big meltdowns on your bike, refusing to ride, sitting on the side of the road, and eventually needing to be carried back to the trailer. You are saying "I can't go that fast" a lot, and it doesn't seem to matter how many times and different ways we explain that you don't have to go fast, you don't have to be with her, you can ride with us- it just makes you feel down.  So this last trip, we had you and Uncle Derran leave about 5 minutes before the rest of us, and when you could not see how fast Ava was going, you were so happy on your bike.
My darling, there are going to be a lot of times in this life where Ava is going to do things that you just can not, but there will also be times when you can do things that she can't.

Sweet babe, I don't think there has ever been a child that loved water more than you do. Whether it is splashing around in your water table, dumping out the dogs water dish, jumping into the kiddie pool in the backyard or watering the plants in the backyard. This summer you have become so confident in the water, and through our daily swims in the Black Mountain pool, you are now jumping in in a lifejacket with needing to be caught, and kicking and paddling back to the wall on your own. This summer we went to the Granville Island waterslides and you tired Daddy out running back up the hill to go AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN! We went to the Bridal Falls waterslides last week, and while Daddy waited at the bottom of the slides for you, you ran up and down and slid down the slide on your own.

Sweetheart, we love you so very much - how sassy and wild you are, how sweet and snuggly you are, and we just can not wait to see who you become.

Sarah Burke

Canadian skiier Sarah Burke died tragically on January 19th. She had an accident training for the half pipe, on January 10th and severed an artery going to her brain. She was placed in a coma for 9 days, but suffered too much irreversible brain damage to survive. I must admit that I had heard of Sarah Burke and knew who she was, but never really followed her, or her husband Rory Bushfield's careers. She lives in Squamish, and when something like this happens to someone your age, so close to where you live, you can't help but pay attention. But this death has shaken me more than I would have ever expected. I have watched videos, read articles, and done so much research since her passing. I am truly, truly shaken, and a bit terrified. What she does is dangerous, and there are extreme risks involved. Risks that her and her family knew, but when you love something, you just take that risk. My Nanny and our Ava

In my last post about my dear, sweet Nanny, I was TERRIFIED (to put it lightly) about my Nanny moving into her new facility.  I was terrified to the point of emailing her new place JUST so they knew how loved she was and remembered to love her double time for her family, even though it is what they do and of course, they will do it well. My dear Ava has this love affair with her Nanny that I only wish Nanny could remember, but as my Auntie Sherri put it best, sometimes it is nice to be able to just live in the moment, and we should be thankful that Nanny has those joyous moments.
