Our BABY is ONE!

Darling girl, how did it happen that you were born a few days ago, sweet, peaceful and with a head full of jet black hair, and then I sneezed, or blinked, or whatever it is that they say, and you were one? If I am remembering it correctly, that is exactly how it happened.

Darling girl...I took a break after I wrote the first paragraph and have come back, and you are now 13 months old, and you have already had your birthday party. I have been feeling guilt about it for weeks, but chia ia how our life goes sometimes!
Darling bean, on your first birthday we celebrated you at Flood Falls with our wee family and the Uchida's. We have a "tradition" of sorts in our family where our wee family spends the morning of your birthday (or your whole birthday if it falls on a weekday and we aren't having your party) in the outdoors together and then gathers together later on with our whole big family to celebrate in a louder, less peaceful fashion! On the morning of your birthday we decided on Flood Falls, because as a baby it was a place that AMAZED you. The first time we went, the falls were raging and you were in the carrier on Daddy, and even though your tiny baby face was getting wet with the mist coming off the falls, you threw your head back and did not break your gaze until we broke our stillness. You could have stayed there all day looking at that powerful waterfall. The sound of the water crashing, the feel of it on your face - your senses may have been overwhelmed, but your body was as peaceful as it had ever been.

We had our whole big Watson family, and Nana and Papa and Great Nana and Papa over for your party and you enjoyed it all. You dug into your cake like a seasoned food taster - first a dip of your finger and a lick, then you grabbed your vanilla cupcake with two hands and tasted it, and after deciding that you liked what had tasted, you set it down on the tray infront of you and dove your face right into it.
You had lots of help from brother, sister, and cousins to open your gifts and you enjoyed being sang to.

Darling girl, I wish I had finished writing this just before or just after we celebrated your first birthday, because in the weeks that have followed since, your personality has changed in LEAPS and BOUNDS.
You have so lovingly been talked about as a calm, peaceful observer of this crazy world, and my darling bean, in the month since your birthday, we think that you did enough observing to decide what you would and would not be, annnnnd you decided you would like to now be HEARD.

Darling girl, you so loudly and curiously say what we can only guess is, "What's THAT?!" on repeat these days. You want to know what everything is, you want to touch everything, and you want to see everything, and "what's THAT?!" is your route to get all of the things that you need.
You want to be carried around less and less, as you are crawling at the speed of light and getting sturdier every day. You are pulling yourself up on everything and are more often letting go and standing on your own. You are getting comfortable holding one of our hands and walking alongside us, but are not yet ready to take those steps on your own.
Your depth perception is still questionable and you would crawl off the couch, the bed, or down the stairs without a second thought, and so far (KNOCK ON WOOD!) we have saved you any big tumbles.

You have 8 sweet teeth that you use to pretend to bite us with and to eat everything in site. You like all food, except eggs and bacon, so far, and are particularly fond of fruit and toast. After your first birthday and your first taste of cupcakes, you have also discovered that you like sweet things, like granola bars, brother and sisters cookies, and especially homemade smoothie popsicles.

Darling, your brother and sister are falling more in love with you every day. Since you were little, when we would bring you out after a sleep, or upstairs open waking up in the morning, your big brother is SO excited to see you. He often wants to come down to get you and to crawl into your crib with you to play. He is so good at sharing snacks, toys, and anything that is his, except Bunny, with you.
Your big sister loves to dance with you and will hold your hands as you both stand together and show you her very best moves. She is our go-to when we have to go to the bathroom or get something ready, and will sit with you, play with you, and shower you with love without even a second thought. She is probably asked to help with you too much, but the love she has for you has also grown because of it.

Darling girl, we are so happy you are ours and we can not wait to see what these next few months bring for you. And I promise I will do better and recording them! Love you to pieces, darling bean.
